Travel Tips & Tales

WELCOME TO PRIMI PASSI

Consider this your permission slip.

Permission to take your family out into the world exactly as you are. To put your kid on an airplane and stand in front of something ancient and enormous together. To go to restaurants, splash in hotel pools, and boldly take up space that is your human right on this planet.

Autistic families exist everywhere, yet statistics suggest that 87% of them don't travel (IBCCES). They worry about the what-ifs, the meltdowns, the stares and judgment. They worry about breaking their child's routine, finding safe foods, and navigating transitions. All of these concerns are valid, yet none of them are insurmountable. I know because I've done it time and time again with my own family, and through that I learned something unexpected: travel also gives your child a permission slip.

Permission to try new things without the expectation that they do it consistently in their home environment. Permission to stray from routine because when everything is different, suddenly nothing needs to be the same anymore. All of a sudden the kid who only eats 5 things the day before your flight is eating curry for breakfast the next morning. The kid who won't dunk her head underwater for a year at swim class is happily submerged at the hotel pool. Yes, these are true stories about my own children.

And though this sounds like magic, there's also a lot of strategic support built into the execution of a successful trip. Comfort items. A backpack full of safe foods. Appropriate pacing. Carefully selected destinations and accommodations. And this is where I come in: with the strategy, the experience, and the evidence that your family belongs out there.
